Sign, Don't Sigh

2017

Concept

Indian Sign Language and Learning

This communication design project deconstructs Indian Sign Language to bridge the communication barriers between deaf and hearing indians. By incorporating the visual referent of a signed gesture, it helps a non-native signer to comprehend a sign. The flash cards and app aim to bridge the gap between deaf and hearing individuals by tackling disconnectedness and unease in interactions by visualising Indian Sign Language in contextualised and relatable forms.

How?

The premise of the project was based on three things. That deaf people have their own culture. They use Indian Sign Language to communicate. Hearing persons want to, but do not how to interact with deaf people. The study aimed at bringing out the visuality of Indian Sign Language to bridge the communication gap through communication design.
